Surveyor Selfie

J.L.  McConnell put his picture on the map

Many 1850s-era maps make full use of the margins, often filling them with village plans, business directories, or lithograph portraits of preeminent men in the county. The lead surveyor of the Greene County PA 1895 map, J.L. McConnell, had a better idea: Put in a selfie!

There's just enough room between Greensboro and  Clarksville villages to fit himself in. And why shouldn't he? Surveying an entire county is not an easy task.

You can see his name on the map's cartouche.

You can purchase a print of Mr. McConnell's portrait, the village plans, individual towns, or the entire wall map, at www.old-maps.com.
