Surveyor Selfie

Image
J.L.  McConnell put his picture on the map Many 1850s-era maps make full use of the margins, often filling them with village plans, business directories, or lithograph portraits of preeminent men in the county. T he lead surveyor of the Greene County PA 1895 map, J.L. McConnell, had a better idea: Put in a selfie! There's just enough room between Greensboro and  Clarksville villages to fit himself in. And why shouldn't he? Surveying an entire county is not an easy task. You can see his name on the map's cartouche. You can purchase a print of Mr. McConnell's portrait, the village plans, individual towns, or the entire wall map, at www.old-maps.com .

Dinner!

Image
This flag flies over the farm and residence of Merwin Moses. Is this a map maker's joke? Is the flag used to communicate to workers at the furthest reaches of the farm? Or did Moses also serve food to travelers? Here's Merwin's beautiful spread. We found this while chopping towns out of the Eau Claire County WI map 1878. Here's the title block from the map. If you would like to have your own copy of the picture of The Moses farm, or of one of the Eau Claire towns, click here . If you'd prefer the whole county map as shown above, check out www.old-maps.com here .

New York's First Mayor

Image
Here is the final resting place of Thomas Willett, the first Mayor of New York, on the shore of Bullocks Cove. This shows exactly where the graveyard is. This is from the Map of Providence Rhode Island 1851. The grave actually is in Massachusetts. This is the title block from the full wall map. You can buy the Providence County Rhode Island 1851 wall map from www.old-maps.com by clicking here . You can purchase the Barrington town map here .

The Mystery of Dark Corner

Image
Dark Corner! What does that name call to mind? Let your imagination run wild! This Dark Corner appears on the Anderson County, South Carolina 1877 wall map.   You can see here that the town lurks in the southwest corner of Anderson County.   The Gothic typeface of the title block seems perfect for a county with a Dark Corner. Here is the Anderson County South Carolina 1877 wall map, available for purchase here . If you'd like a town map to comb through the names of the people who called Dark Corner home, click here .

Buildings!

Image
An unusual  Iowa county wall map depicting a church, gravestones? (or plantings) and a house. Other towns on the 1869 Delaware County wall map show house sketches and what appear to be plantings.     Another interesting detail on this 1869 Iowa Wall Map is the map key in German:   Look for Honey Creek and all the 1869 town prints for Delaware County Iowa as well as the whole county wall map at https://shop.old-maps.com/

The Tuscorora Indians in New York

Image
The Tuscarora Indian Reservation is still there in 2024. Here's how it was shown on the 1852 Niagara County wall map, surrounded by the town of Lewiston. It was a large area in 1852. Title block from the old wall map. We noticed this reservation when we were "chopping up" the old county map into town prints, which we sell.   The original 1852 map is a large 41x59. Stealth Ad on Flagpole

Image
The photographer for this picture snuck his name onto the flag! It's hard to read, but this says "W.B. Deans Ambrotypes." You could call it an 1850s version of today's digital "Easter eggs," a little surprise hidden where you might never know to look. The engraving appears in the lower left corner of the Susquehanna County PA 1858 wall map. Isn't that grapevine border lovely?   The whole colorful map is available from www.old-maps.com.  If you are Mr. Deans's great granddaughter, you can buy your copy of his stealth ad here.

Farm for Sale!

Image
In 1854, an entrepreneurial farmer in Norwich CT included an advertisement for selling his New London County farm. Normally only homeowners names were listed on the old county maps. The "fine location" straddled the town line of Franklin and Norwich.   Look at our town and wall maps of 1854 New London County at: https://shop.old-maps.com/

Shaker Seeds

Image
At an 1855 Shaker Community in Enfield CT, Jefferson White put in an advertising plug:   This shows that the Shakers were not only great inventors but also shrewd marketers. Their village in Connecticut was located in the town of Enfield, CT, bordering Somers and Longmeadow, MA Visit our website at https://shop.old-maps.com/   to view the Enfield/Shakers map and the wall map of Hartford County, CT.

An Eye Opener!

Image
On an old 1853 Chemung County New York wall map, an "oculist" from Elmira is trying to get your attention! What is unusual, is the placement of the eyeball right under the fancy map title. Perhaps DH Lownsberry paid extra for the prominent advertisement or he was a friend of the map authors?? This wall map and and individual town print of Elmira can be found at: https://shop.old-maps.com/

Bad Luck Swamp & Mt Terrydiddle!

Image
